Intro to Chasing: Art of the Chisel

  • metal arts academy 1039 High Street, Suite #10 Auburn, CA 95603 usa (map)

Metal Arts Academy is nestled in a lovely spot in Auburn California and ran by some very good friends of mine (who are a wealth of knowledge in their own right). I’ve worked with Metal Arts Academy for a year now and can’t speak highly enough of their heart and their quality. We pull all the stops to make our local workshop run with elements I just cannot provide normally when I travel! Not all of my work and tools fit on a plane believe it or not! So it always counts to join me locally if you can. I bring in the Elephant and everything, it’s a damn good show.

Endorsement aside let’s get to the grit of what we’re doing.

This is a two day workshop designed to help folks brush up or become acquainted with chasing. If your chisels have been neglected for 20 years and you’ve been looking for an excuse to dust them off, or if you just want to try your hand at some free hand chisel work this is the course for you.

This Sea shell is one of many beginner projects that I have available with walk throughs.

This Sea shell is one of many beginner projects that I have available with walk throughs.

We’ll be focusing on the fundamentals of chisel technique, hammer control, pitch management, and how to use design to compliment our medium. You will have the option of what your project will be after our short warm up project.

The warm up allows us to go over the pitch and all the tooling provided. We’ll have time to adjust the techniques to suit a small subject of your choosing. It helps to choose something that will fit in the palm of your hand, anything larger and we might need longer than our workshop accommodates. Of course if you want suggestions with more guidance to test the techniques given I have plenty to choose from that already have walk throughs to guide us as we go.

This course is short and comprehensive, ran at very accommodating speed by experienced hosts. Join us for some creativity and laughs, brighten your world with your own good works.

All tooling provided.

All materials provided.

You can bring your own ear protection to make yourself more comfortable but we’ll have some spares.

Wear clothing you are able to work in.
