1/4 inch Pierce Work
Once I hand cut this grill from 1/4 inch thick steel I made sure to take it real slow with the shaping once in the forge to avoid cracking. After tuned to the customers helm (the helm wasn't my work, the customer already owned it) then I could do the final sculpt on this grill to get the detail. Final patina was straw brown, got it through even heating at 410 degree's for almost 2 hours. It is my hope that this type of pierce work grill will bury the older welded "bar" grill you see on 90% of helms today. When I make more of these I'm going to use a slightly thinner sheet steel. 1/4 inch thick steel is just a little more beefy than what's needed, but hey! Super strong :P
